Smog is a kind of air pollution; the word "smog" is a portmanteau of smoke and fog. Classic smog results from large amounts of coal burning in an area and is caused by a mixture of smoke and sulphur dioxide.

Bill Callahan (born approximately 1968 or 1969), also known as Smog and (Smog), is an American singer-songwriter born in Silver Spring, Maryland. Callahan began working in the lo-fi genre of underground rock, with home-made tape-albums recorded on four track tape recorders. Later he began releasing albums with the label Drag City. He is currently dating folk singer Joanna Newsom, to whose newest album he contributed on the song "Only Skin."

Bill Callahan (né en 1966 à Silver Spring dans le Maryland), connu aussi sous les noms de Smog ou (Smog), est un chanteur et compositeur pop américain. Il a commencé à produire des cassettes et disques de Lo-fi ou d'Alt-country avant de sortir des albums avec un son plus professionnel sur le label Drag City. Jest to nienaturalne zjawisko atmosferyczne polegające na współdziałaniu zanieczyszczeń powietrza spowodowanych działalnością człowieka oraz niekorzystnych naturalnych zjawisk atmosferycznych: znacznej wilgotności powietrza (mgła) i braku wiatru. Lo smog è una forma di inquinamento atmosferico.Il termine nasce come portmanteau delle due parole inglesi smoke (fumo) e fog (nebbia). Durante la rivoluzione industriale nelle grandi città come Londra dove il particolato prodotto dalla combustione del carbone e la nebbia si combinavano in un aerosol.Oggi l'industria ed il riscaldamento domestico non utilizzano più il carbone ed il termine viene utilizzato genericamente per indicare l'inquinamento atmosferico che si verifica negli strati bassi dell'atmosfera in condizioni di calma di vento e di inversioni termiche alle basse quote.
