Slide guitar or bottleneck guitar is a particular method or technique for playing the guitar. The term slide is in reference to the sliding motion of the slide against the strings, while bottleneck refers to the original material of choice for such slides, which were the necks of glass bottles. Instead of altering the pitch of the strings in the normal manner (by pressing the string against frets), a slide is placed upon the string to vary its vibrating length, and pitch. This slide can then be moved along the string without lifting, creating continuous transitions in pitch.

Bottleneck est un terme qui vient de l'anglais et qui signifie littéralement « goulot de bouteille. » Il s'agit d'un tube de verre, de métal ou de plastique que le guitariste place sur un doigt de la main gauche (pour un droitier), donnant ainsi un son métallique, froid ou chaud selon la matière, spécifique au blues. Le bottleneck était à l'origine un goulot de bouteille que les bluesmen faisaient glisser sur les cordes de la guitare. On le place sur l'annulaire si la guitare est accordée en open-tuning, ou sur l'auriculaire si l'accordage est standard, les autres doigts restant libres pour jouer les accords.

Eine Slide-Gitarre muss kein eigenständiges Musikinstrument sein. Der Begriff bezeichnet häufig eine mit Stahlsaiten bespannte Gitarre, die mit einem sogenannten Bottleneck oder Slide-Bar gespielt wird. Dabei lässt man das Bottleneck über die Saiten gleiten (engl. slide), wodurch die charakteristische Klangfarbe entsteht. Es gibt allerdings auch speziell für diesen Zweck ausgerichtete Instrumente wie etwa die Hawaii-Gitarre, auch als Lap-Steel-Gitarre bezeichnet, sowie die technisch aufwändigere Pedal-Steel-Gitarre.

L'espressione steel guitar indica una serie di strumenti musicali cordofoni che hanno alcune affinità con la chitarra propriamente detta, ma che vengono suonati esclusivamente con il bottleneck. Tali strumenti sono noti anche con i nomi di slide guitar o squareneck e vengono volgarmente detti chitarre hawaiiane.

Slide guitar, ou Bottleneck guitar, é uma forma de tocar guitarra, em que se utiliza, actualmente, um pequeno tubo ôco (Bottleneck), de metal (originalmente o gargalo de uma garrafa), para alterar o tom em que se toca, deslizando esse tubo pelas cordas da guitarra. Este método é, habitualmente, utilizado nos blues e no country. Alguns músicos que utilizam esta técnica: Ry Cooder, Elmore James (considerado o Rei da Slide Guitar), Johnny Shines, Muddy Waters ou Joe Walsh.
