Skateboarder Magazine was first published in 1964 as a quarterly during the first skateboarding boom by Surfer Publications out of Dana Point, California. After an initial release of only four issues in 1964–65, it ceased publication until the first big skateboard revival of the early 1970s. The magazine started life as The Quarterly Skateboarder, but the title was abbreviated to just Skateboarder from Volume 1 Number 3 on. In his first editorial, John Severson wrote: "Today's skateboarders are founders in this sport – they're pioneers – they are the first. There is no history in Skateboarding – its being made now – by you. The sport is being molded and we believe that doing the right thing now will lead to a bright future for the sport. Already, there are storm clouds on the horizon with opponents of the sport talking about ban and restriction."

Skateboarding is an action sport which involves riding and performing tricks using a skateboard. Skateboarding can also be considered a recreational activity, an art form, a job, or a method of transportation. Skateboarding has been shaped and influenced by many skateboarders throughout the years. A 2002 report found that there were 18.5 million skateboarders in the world. 85% of skateboarders polled who had used a board in the last year were under the age of 18, and 74% were male.

Ein Skateboard [], gelegentlich eingedeutscht auch Rollbrett genannt, ist ein Brett (Deck) mit zwei Achsen (Trucks) und vier Rollen (Wheels), auf welchem man sich stehend durch Abstoßen mit einem Bein fortbewegen kann. Das Skateboard wird selten nur als reines Fortbewegungsmittel eingesetzt. Das Skateboarden (Skaten) hat sich vielmehr im Lauf der Jahrzehnte zu einer Sportart entwickelt mit einem reichen Repertoire an Kunststücken (Tricks) wie meistens Sprünge mit dem Skateboard und oft in Kombinationen mit Drehungen des Brettes und des Körpers und einer eigenen Begrifflichkeit.

La planche à roulette, ou skateboard, est composée d'un plateau sous lequel sont fixés deux essieux (dits aussi trucks) permettant de maintenir sur chacun d'eux deux roues. Elle peut servir à se déplacer, mais surtout à réaliser des figures (tricks) de toutes sortes, en environnement urbain (appelé street) ou dans des parcs spécialisés, les skateparks. Le pratiquant de ces disciplines est dénommé skateur (ou skater du terme anglais).
Vers 1988, le skateboard revient une nouvelle fois à la mode. La discipline s'étant un peu essoufflée, l'innovation, facteur très important, est plus que jamais à l'ordre du jour. Des stars tels que Natas Kaupas ou Mark Gonzales voient très loin : les mains courantes, les rails, etc. Ils poussent leurs boards dans une nouvelle direction, plus folle. La pratique reste essentiellement urbaine, mais cette fois les skateurs utilisent au maximum la configuration de la ville. Si cette époque fait l'apanage de l'utilisation des rails (voir plus bas), la nouvelle génération de la fin des années 1980 montre également son niveau sur des gaps : des sauts d'espaces, de marches, etc.

Campioni come Stacy Peralta, Rodney Mullen, Tony Alva, Tony Hawk, Alan Gelfand, Dave Andrecht, Eddie Elguera, Danny Way, Andy McDonald, Ali Boulala,Luca Giammarco, Steve Caballero hanno contribuito a diffondere la passione per questo sport.
