single (relationship)

In relationships, a single person is one who is not married, or, more broadly, who is not in an exclusive romantic relationship. Single people may engage in dating to find a partner or spouse. Not all single people actively seek out a relationship, however, as some are content to wait for the 'right' person to enter their lives, while others do not seek relations at all.According to the United States Bureau of the Census, the fastest-growing household type since the 1980s has been the single person.

Een alleenstaande (of "modern-Nederlands": single) is iemand die geen partner heeft, alleen woont en in het eigen dagelijks onderhoud voorziet. Soms wordt ook wel het woord alleengaande gebruikt in verband met een eventuele negatieve lading die het woord alleenstaande kan hebben.Nederland telt ongeveer 2,3 miljoen alleenstaanden. Naar verwachting zal dit aantal flink toenemen tot ruim 3 miljoen singles in 2025. Deze groei komt volledig voor rekening van het aantal middelbare en oudere alleenstaanden. Het aantal jongere alleenstaanden blijft in de komende 20 jaar ongeveer gelijk.

独身（どくしん）とは、結婚していない為に配偶者が無い状態、または、その状態にある人を指す。結婚相手と死別したり、離婚したために配偶者がない人も独身と呼ばれる。婚姻届を出していない事実婚の状態は、独身とみなされることもあれば結婚しているとみなされることもある。
