Sial or SiAl is the name for the upper layer of the Earth's crust, which is also known as the continental crust because it is absent in the wide oceanic basins. This layer is made of rocks rich in silicates and aluminium minerals. When the sial comes to the surface it is typically granitic, so sometimes this layer is called the 'granitic layer' of the crust. Geologists often refer to the rocks in this layer as felsic. On the continental plates the sial runs between 5 km and 70 km deep. Because in a real sense the sial floats on the sima, mountains extend down as well as up, much like icebergs on the ocean, hence the great variation in depth. See Isostasy.

Le sial est le nom que l'on donnait à la fine croûte terrestre (de 10 à 20 kilomètres d’épaisseur) composée principalement de silice et d’alumine (ou silicate d’aluminium). Le mot sial est formé par l'union des symboles des deux éléments chimiques silicium (Si) et aluminium (Al). Aujourd’hui, on a plutôt tendance à appeler le sial la croûte continentale.

Die kontinentale Erdkruste besteht im Gegensatz zur ozeanischen Erdkruste aus magmatischen Gesteinen mit mittlerem bis hohem SiO2-Gehalt, teils mächtigen Sedimenten und den daraus entstandenen metamorphen Produkten. Aufgrund des relativ zur ozeanischen Kruste hohen Anteils an Aluminium (Al) und dem generell hohen Anteil an Silicium (Si), ist für die kontinentale Erdkruste auch die Abkürzung SIAL (auch SiAl) gebräuchlich.

Sial - dawna nazwa warstwy wyróżnianej w obrębie skorupy ziemskiej. Sial buduje kontynenty, jego gęstość wynosi 2,7 g/cm³. Główne pierwiastki budujące warstwę to krzem i glin. Wraz z głębokością sial przechodzi stopniowo w gęstszą simę. Umowną granicą gęstości jest nieciągłość Conrada wyznaczona na średniej gęstości 2,8 g/cm³. Współcześnie zamiennie używana z nazwą warstwa granitowa.

Continentale korst is het type aardkorst waaruit de continenten inclusief het continentaal plat grotendeels bestaan. Het andere type korst is oceanische korst. Als de onder de aardkorst liggende lithosferische mantel wordt meegerekend spreekt men van continentale lithosfeer of oceanische lithosfeer. Tektonische platen kunnen beide typen lithosfeer bevatten.
