Short subject is a format description originally coined in the North American film industry in the early period of cinema. The description is now used almost interchangeably with short film; either term is often abbreviated to short (as a noun, e.g. 'a short'). Although the North American definition generally refers to films of between 20 and 40 minutes long, the definition refers to much shorter films in Europe, Latin America and Australasia. In New Zealand, for instance, the description can be used to describe any film that has a duration longer than 1 minute and shorter than 15 minutes. The North American definition also tends to focus much more on character whereas the European and Australasian forms tend to depend much more on visual drama and plot twists. In this way, the North American form can be understood to be a derivation of the feature film form, usually acting as a platform for aspirant Hollywood directors. Elsewhere, short films tend to work as showcases for cinematographers and commercial directors.

Un court métrage (ou court-métrage) est un film de cinéma d'une durée plus courte que la durée classique des films commerciaux passant en salle. Le terme « métrage » fait référence à la longueur de la bobine. On retrouve dans le court métrage les mêmes catégories cinématographiques que le long métrage (film documentaire, fiction, etc.)

Film krótkometrażowy – film, którego czas projekcji nie przekracza 30-60 minut. Granica ta nie jest ściśle określona. Niegdyś za filmy krótkometrażowe uznawano filmy o długości do 20-30 minut, co było związane z tym, że prezentowano je głównie jako dodatki do filmów długometrażowych w kinach. Obecnie filmy te są zazwyczaj prezentowane przez stacje telewizyjne, które preferują metraż zbliżony do pełnej godziny.

Un cortometraggio è un film la cui durata normalmente non supera i 30 minuti complessivi (al festival di Clermont-Ferrand, il più importante per i cortometraggi, la durata massima ammessa è di 40 minuti).I corti - come vengono chiamati in gergo - derivano il loro nome appunto dalla lunghezza della pellicola, a sua volta definita nel linguaggio cinematografico appunto "metraggio" (che nei normali film solitamente ammonta a svariate migliaia di metri in relazione al tipo di pellicola ed alla durata del film stesso).
