Sexually transmitted infections (STI), also referred to as sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and venereal diseases (VD), are illnesses that have a significant probability of transmission between humans by means of human sexual behavior, including vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex. While in the past, these illnesses have mostly been referred to as STDs or VD, in recent years the term sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has been preferred, as it has a broader range of meaning; a person may be infected, and may potentially infect others, without having a disease. Some STIs can also be transmitted via the use of IV drug needles after its use by an infected person, as well as through childbirth or breastfeeding. Sexually transmitted infections have been well known for hundreds of years.

Sexuell übertragbare Erkrankungen, im Deutschen auch engl. STD (sexually transmitted diseases) oder STI (sexually transmitted infections) genannt, sind jene Krankheiten, die auch oder hauptsächlich durch den Geschlechtsverkehr übertragen werden können. Sie können von Bakterien, Viren, Pilzen, Protozoen und Arthropoden verursacht werden.

Une infection sexuellement transmissible (IST), ou au Québec une infection transmise sexuellement et par le sang (ITSS), est une maladie infectieuse qui se transmet entre partenaires au cours de différentes formes de rapports sexuels — contacts génitaux ou sanguins, rapports oraux, vaginaux ou anaux (muqueuses et fluides corporels). Le Grand Dictionnaire terminologique traite distinctement d'infection transmissible sexuellement (ITS) et d'infection transmissible sexuellement et par le sang (ITSS).

Sexuellt överförbara infektioner (STI:er), sexuellt överförbara sjukdomar (STD:er), veneriska sjukdomar, är infektioner av smittämnen som kan spridas via sexuellt umgänge. Detta innefattar både könssjukdomar och sjukdomar som kan överföras genom sexuellt umgänge, men inte drabbar könsorganen.
