It is the smallest interval commonly used in Western music, and is considered the most dissonant. The most commonly written form of this interval is the minor second, notated using two adjacent letter names (e.g. C and D♭), but the augmented unison is also used, both notes having the same letter-name, with one of the notes being inflected by an accidental (e.g. C and C♯).

Halbton ist ein mehrdeutiger Intervall-Name. In seiner Hauptbedeutung bezeichnet der Begriff den halben Ganzton, also ein Zwölftel der Oktave (je nach Notationsform entweder eine kleine Sekunde oder eine übermäßige Prime). Diese rechnerisch exakte Bedeutung steckt schon im Namen und gilt auch im heute verbreiteten in zwölf gleichen Stufen temperierten Tonsystem. Zugleich ist es die ursprüngliche Bedeutung bei Aristoxenos, der den Begriff prägte.

Um semitom é o menor intervalo utilizado na escala diatônica (e conseqüentemente em grande parte da música ocidental). Corresponde à diferença de altura entre duas teclas adjacentes do piano (uma branca e a preta adjacente, ou duas brancas quando não há uma preta entre elas). Também é o intervalo entre duas notas produzidas ao apoiar o dedo sobre duas casas adjacentes na mesma corda de uma guitarra, por exemplo. O tamanho exato de um semitom (em relação às freqüências) depende do temperamento que é utilizado. O intervalo de segunda menor é considerado fortemente dissonante.
