Selenium (IPA: ) is a chemical element with atomic number 34, with the chemical symbol Se. It is a nonmetal, chemically related to sulfur and tellurium, and rarely occurring in its elemental state in nature. It is toxic in large amounts, but trace amounts of it are necessary for cellular function in most, if not all, animals, forming the active center of certain enzymes. Selenium is an essential component of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) which catalyzes the reaction:2 GSH+ H2O2---------GSH-Px → GSSG + 2 H2O

Selen (Se, łac. selenium) - pierwiastek chemiczny z grupy półmetali w układzie okresowym.Znanych jest kilkanaście jego izotopów z przedziału mas 65-91, z których trwałych jest 6. Pierwiastek ten został odkryty w roku 1817 przez J. J. Berzeliusa. Nazwa pochodzi od greckiego słowa selene - księżyc (bo zawsze występował obok telluru, łac. tellus - ziemia).

Il selenio è l'elemento chimico di numero atomico 34. Il suo simbolo è Se. È un non metallo tossico, chimicamente affine allo zolfo ed al tellurio. Esiste in diverse forme allotropiche, di cui una stabile dall'aspetto grigio e simile ad un metallo, in questa forma il selenio possiede una resistenza elettrica inferiore quando è esposto alla luce, pertanto trova impiego nella realizzazione delle fotocellule. In natura si trova in minerali costituiti da solfuri come, ad esempio, la pirite.
