Sedative
A sedative is a substance that depresses the
central nervous system (CNS), resulting in calmness, relaxation, reduction of
anxiety, sleepiness, and slowed breathing, as well as slurred speech, staggering
gait, poor judgment, and slow, uncertain
reflexes. Sedatives may be referred to as tranquilizers, depressants, anxiolytics, soporifics, sleeping pills, downers, or sedative-hypnotics. Sedatives can be abused to produce an overly-calming effect (
alcohol being the classic and most common sedating drug). At high doses or when they are abused, many of these drugs can cause
unconsciousness (see
hypnotic) and even death.

substance qui a une action dépressive sur le
système nerveux central et qui entraîne un apaisement, une relaxation, une réduction de l'
anxiété, une somnolence, un ralentissement de la respiration, une démarche chancelante, des troubles du jugement et une diminution des réflexes. Un sédatif peut être aussi désigné comme tranquillisant,
dépresseur,
anxiolytique, soporifique, somnifère ou sédatif-
hypnotique. À forte dose, la plupart des sédatifs peuvent entrainer l'
inconscience et la
mort.

Tranquillanzien
Als Tranquillanzien bzw. Tranquilizer (lat. tranquillare = beruhigen) wird eine Gruppe von
Psychopharmaka zusammengefasst, die angstlösend (anxiolytisch) und entspannend (
sedierend) wirken. Als synonyme Begriffe gelten
Anxiolytika (lat. anxius = Angst; griech. lytikos = fähig zu lösen) und Ataraktika (griech. ataraktor = ausgeglichen).

抗不安薬
抗不安薬（こうふあんやく、minor tranquilizer,antianxiety drugs)は、マイナートランキライザーとも言い、
精神疾患に使われる
向精神薬の一種である。弱い安定剤と言われている様に
抗精神病薬と呼ばれるメジャートランキライザーと比べても作用や副作用は弱い。抗不安薬には、
脳神経に作用し、
不安（恐怖）・緊張といった症状を緩和させる作用がある。睡眠時の緊張を緩和させる事から
睡眠薬として利用される場合もある。
パニック障害、
不安障害、ストレス障害（
PTSD、
急性ストレス障害）など不安をともなう疾患に多く利用されている。また、症状によっては内科などでも処方され、手術の麻酔前に投与されることがある。現在、日本国内において一般的に利用される抗不安薬は、
ベンゾジアゼピン系とチエノジアゼピン系に分類されるものがほとんどである。（チエノジアゼピン系はベンゾジアゼピン系とは異なるが作用はほぼ同じである。）
