Seafood is any sea animal or seaweed that is served as food or is suitable for eating, particularly seawater animals, such as fish and shellfish (including mollusks and crustaceans). By extension, in North America although not generally in the United Kingdom, the term seafood is also applied to similar animals from fresh water and all edible aquatic animals are collectively referred to as seafood.

Les fruits de mer doivent leur nom à leur provenance du milieu marin et à ce qu'ils sont comestibles. Dans l'acception la plus usuelle, il s'agit d'une grande variété d'organismes marins, à l'exception des poissons. Parmi les plus courants consommés en France, on distingue cinq catégories : - les coquillages, mollusques à coquille :l'huître,la moule,le buccin,la palourde,le pétoncle,la mye,le couteau de mer,le vernis,l'amande,la praire,la coquille Saint-Jacques,la telline.

Als Meeresfrüchte bezeichnet man in der Regel alle essbaren Meerestiere, die keine Wirbeltiere (Fische oder Wale) sind. Typische Meeresfrüchte sind Muscheln und Wasserschnecken, Tintenfische und Kalmare, Garnelen, Krabben, Langusten und Hummer. Meeresfrüchte können Fang- oder Zuchtprodukte sein. Aus dieser Bezeichnung spricht ein deutlich agrarisch geprägtes Verständnis in der Nutzung des Meeres, wie es sich idealerweise im Mittelmeerraum, speziell in Italien, ausprägen konnte. Insbesondere die Römer verstanden diese Nahrung als Segen der Meere und ihrer Götter, was z. B. im mehrmaligen Auftreten der Muschel in der antiken Mythologie belegt. In der christlichen Heiligenverehrung wurde die Muschel gleichermaßen übernommen. (siehe Jakobsmuschel). Selbst in der Architektur des Barock und des Rokoko wurde die Muschel als vollkommenes Produkt der Natur neben anderen vegetabilischen Motiven zu einem der herausragenden Ornamente erkoren (siehe Rocaille).

Owoce morza (wł.: frutti di mare) - rozmaite zwierzęta morskie, jak skorupiaki i mięczaki w tym małże, głowonogi i szkarłupnie, w wielu krajach uważane za prawdziwe rarytasy. Tradycyjnie spożywane są powszechnie w krajach śródziemnomorskich oraz na antypodach. Prawdopodobnie odgrywały one ważną rolę w odżywianiu człowieka już od początków jego historii. Wśród pozostałości po zamierzchłych społecznościach epoki kamiennej archeologowie w wielu miejscach na całym świecie natrafiają na szczątki skorupiaków, co świadczy, że jadano je jeszcze przed początkami rolnictwa.

Na culinária os frutos do mar ou mariscos são produtos comestíveis extraídos do mar, tais como crustáceos, moluscos e outros pequenos animais marinhos, com a exceção dos peixes. O termo em inglês seafood no entanto engloba os peixes em seu "conjunto semântico".
