Seafloor spreading occurs at mid-ocean ridges, where new oceanic crust is formed through volcanic activity and then gradually moves away from the ridge. Seafloor spreading helps explain continental drift in the theory of plate tectonics.Earlier theories (e.g., by Alfred Wegener) of continental drift were that continents "plowed" through the sea. The idea that the seafloor itself moves (and carries the continents with it) as it expands from a central axis was proposed by Harry Hess from Princeton University in the 1960s. The theory is well-accepted now, and the phenomenon is known to be caused by convection currents in the plastic, very weak upper mantle, or asthenosphere.

Ozeanbodenspreizung (engl.: Seafloor spreading) wird ein geologisch-tektonischer Prozess genannt, der Anfang der 1960er Jahre durch Forschungsschiffe entdeckt wurde und den ersten messbaren Hinweis auf die später formulierte Theorie der Plattentektonik gab.Die Plattentektonik erklärt die Kontinentalverschiebung und andere damit in Zusammenhang stehende Abläufe in der Erdkruste. Während die (erst in den 1970er Jahren näher definierten) ozeanischen Platten auseinanderwandern, bringt aufsteigendes Magma aus der Asthenosphäre zwischen den Platten neue Erdkruste hervor. Es bilden sich mittelozeanische Rücken aus, das sind untermeerische Gebirgszüge, die entlang der Plattengrenzen ein weltumspannendes, zehntausende Kilometer langes Netz mit vielfältiger vulkanischer Aktivität bilden.

Spreading to proces rozrastania się dna morskiego w rejonie grzbietu oceanicznego.Dno oceanu ulega ciągłym przemianom. W miejscu gdzie przebiega grzbiet oceaniczny występuje strefa spreadingu czyli rozrastania się dna morskiego. Grzbiety oceaniczne tworzą sieć wokół całej Ziemi. Można zaobserwować w tej strefie bardzo silny wulkanizm oraz epicentra trzęsień ziemi. Wiek skorupy oceanicznej rośnie symetrycznie od grzbietu w stronę otaczających kontynentów. Podobnie rośnie miąższość osadów. Wiek najstarszych części skorupy oceanicznej we wszystkich oceanach jest ten sam - górny trias.

Oceanische spreiding is het proces dat volgens de theorie van platentektoniek plaatsvindt op divergente grenzen (voornamelijk mid-oceanische ruggen, zoals de mid-Atlantische rug) tussen tektonische platen. IJsland is een deel van de mid-atlantische rug dat boven water uitsteekt.Aangedreven door een divergente stroming in de mantel, zal de aardkorst uit elkaar drijven bij de divergente plaatgrens, waardoor de korst daar verdunt. Uit de aardmantel komt warm materiaal met een mafische samenstelling omhoog in de vorm van magma, dat de ruimte die in de korst ontstaat door de verdunning opvult. Dit magma zorgt voor vulkanisme (zogenaamd black smoker vulkanisme) op de plaatgrens.
