Scientific notation, also known as standard form, is a notation for writing numbers that is often used by scientists and mathematicians to make it easier to write large and small numbers. A number that is written in scientific notation has several properties that make it very useful to scientists.

La notation (ou écriture) scientifique est une représentation d’un nombre décimal sous la forme d’un produit de deux facteurs. Le premier facteur, appelé mantisse, est un nombre décimal dont la valeur absolue de la partie entière est comprise entre 1 et 9, c’est-à-dire qu’il n’y a qu’un seul chiffre (non nul) à gauche de la virgule, puis un nombre variable de décimales (nombres après la virgule), qui dépend de la précision. Le second facteur, appelé exposant, est une puissance entière de 10.

Als wissenschaftliche Notation (englisch: scientific notation) bezeichnet man die beiden Varianten moderner Zahlendarstellung: die Exponentialdarstellung, auch traditionelle wissenschaftliche Notation genannt, und die sogenannte technische Notation (englisch: engineering notation).Die traditionelle wissenschaftliche Notation, die immer nur eine – von Null verschiedene – linksseitige Dezimalstelle duldet, wird im Artikel Exponentialdarstellung behandelt. Der Vorteil ist in der Wissenschaft der schnelle Überblick über die Größenordnung und der evtl. Vergleich mehrerer Zahlenwerte. Normalerweise wird eine Zahl in folgendem Format angegeben: Der Nachteil dieses Notationsformats ist, dass in der Praxis die Ergebnisse meist „nachformatiert“ werden, um sie mit SI-Symboleinheiten verwenden bzw. sie als Zahlen im Zillionensystem ausdrücken zu können.In der technischen Notation werden als Exponenten ausschließlich ganzzahlige Vielfache von 3 verwendet, also ganzzahlige Potenzen von Tausend, eben weil diese den genormten Größenordnungen mikro, milli, kilo, Mega usw. entsprechen.
