In linguistics, specifically phonetics and phonology, schwa can mean:An unstressed and toneless neutral vowel sound in any language, often but not necessarily a mid-central vowel. Such vowels are often transcribed with the symbol <>, regardless of their actual phonetic value.The mid-central vowel sound (rounded or unrounded) in the middle of the vowel chart, stressed or unstressed. In IPA phonetic transcription, it is written as <>. Das Schwa ist die lautliche und orthographische Realisierung des mittleren Zentralvokals, also eine Art Mischung aus allen Vokalen. Im Deutschen kommt das Schwa in Worten wie Mücke oder gegangen vor, wird jedoch orthographisch nicht von anderen Vokalen unterschieden. Da es kein eigenes Schriftzeichen für das Schwa gibt, ist den meisten Deutschsprachigen die Existenz dieses Lauts nicht bewusst.

Il termine schwa o anche scevà designa in linguistica e fonologia una vocale centrale di media apertura, spesso —ma non necessariamente— breve e/o priva di accento. Anche se intorno a questo punto di articolazione esistono diversi suoni vocalici, per i quali l'API ha predisposto opportuni segni, spesso non si ricorre a tali simboli specializzati e ci si limita a segnalare i suoni con questa vocale, che è rappresentata in trascrizione con il glifo . Nel sistema delle vocali, ə indica una vocale al centro del diagramma delle vocali. Il termine designa anche il simbolo stesso.
