Scale armour (armor), Lorica squamata. Jazerant, Jazeraint or Leaf Mail (sometimes erroneously called scale mail) consists of many small scales attached to a backing material of either leather or cloth. It is similar to lamellar armour but distinguished by the presence of the backing material.The material used to make the scales varied and included: bronze, iron, rawhide, leather, cuir bouilli and horn. The variations are primarily the result of material availability.During Roman times scale armour (lorica squamata) was a popular alternative to mail (lorica hamata) as it offered better protection, especially against blunt damage. It was also widely used in Middle Eastern empires such as Persia and Byzantium. In these areas scales were commonly dished (an armouring term used to describe hammering a depression into a flat piece of metal in order to create a 'bowl' effect) in order to benefit from the extra protection offered by a rounded scale.

Bei einem Schuppenpanzer handelt es sich um eine Rüstung, die aus zahlreichen Metallplättchen besteht, welche auf einer festen Unterlage wie zum Beispiel Stoff oder Leder angebracht sind. Aus dem Schuppenpanzer entwickelte sich im fernen Osten der Lamellenpanzer, der aus zahlreichen miteinander verbundenen Metallplättchen besteht, die nicht an eine feste Unterlage vernäht oder vernietet sind. Bei diesen beiden Rüstungstypen handelt es sich um die ältesten Arten von Metallrüstungen in der Geschichte der Menschheit.

Zbroja łuskowa – rodzaj pancerza wykonanego z dużej liczby łusek naszytych lub w inny sposób przytwierdzonych do podłoża skórzanego lub wykonanego z innego mocnego materiału. Ten rodzaj uzbrojenia obronnego pojawił się przed nową erą w stepach. Na kolumnie cesarza Trajana przedstawiono jazdę Roksolanów w zbrojach łuskowych. W jednostkach posiłkowych armii rzymskiej pancerz ten stosowano dosyć często. Przejęty przez Germanów nie zaniknął i rozpowszechnił się w Europie około XI wieku, jest bardziej elastyczny niż pancerz lamelkowy, a zapewnia lepszą ochronę niż kolczuga.
