The term is commonly used to refer to the five daily prayers, which are compulsory upon all mature Muslims. La prière islamique, ou salât, ou salâh ( [ṣalāʰ], qui signifie prière ; acte de dévotion) est le second des cinq piliers de l'islam. Outre la prière à la demande ou surérogatoire (nâfilah), chaque musulman est tenu d'effectuer cinq prières quotidiennes obligatoires (faridah). Dans les pays de langues perse ou indienne, le terme utilisé est namāz.

Salat ( Plural: , im Koran: , persisch namaz, türkisch Namaz, Paschto muns) bezeichnet im Islam das tägliche  Ritualgebet der Muslime in Richtung Mekka (Standort der Kaaba). Diese Gebetsrichtung wird Qibla genannt. Vor dem Gebet muss die rituelle Waschung (Wudu bzw. persisch Abdast, türkisch Abdest genannt) durchgeführt werden. Die zu festgelegten Zeiten zu verrichtenden fünf Gebete sind die oberste Pflicht (fard) für alle volljährigen Musliminnen und Muslime. Unter Sufis gilt salat als das größte dhikr.

Salat (arab. صلوة salah, pers. نماز namâz, tur.  namaz) to muzułmańska rytualna modlitwa, będąca jednym z pięciu obowiązków każdego muzułmanina (tzw. filarów wiary). Odmawia się ją pięciokrotnie w ciągu doby, tj. przed wschodem słońca (Fajr), w południe (Dhuhr), po południu (Asr), po zachodzie słońca (Maghrib) i w pierwszej połowie nocy (Isha'a). Celem salat jest uzyskanie błogosławieństwa Allaha (sawab).

In lingua araba ṣalāt ( صلاة ).Al contrario di altre religioni che inseriscono questi atti devozionali del credente tra gli atti volontari, l'Islam esige da questi che ogni giorno siano cinque le occasioni di preghiera, singola o collettiva, anche se prevede ed esorta a compiere anche altre preghiere volontarie.Il non adempiere a quest'atto - che viene considerato uno dei cinque Arkān al-Islām comporta un'inadempienza grave al volere divino e, come tale, uno stato di peccato che per Kharigiti o Almohadi era addirittura sanzionato dall'autorità pubblica.
