SAFARI was an attempt by the French government, under the presidency of Georges Pompidou, to create a centralized database of personal data. The database was supposed to interconnect data, in particular through the use of the INSEE code (also used as a Social Security number).On March 21 1974 an article in the newspaper Le Monde brought public attention to the project. The massive popular rejection of this project promoted the creation of the CNIL to ensure data privacy. SAFARI stands for Système Automatisé pour les Fichiers Administratifs et le Répertoire des Individus, "Automated System for Administrative Files and the Repertory of Individuals".

A safari (IPA pronunciation: ) is an overland journey. It usually refers to a trip by tourists to Africa, traditionally for a big-game hunt and in more modern times to watch and photograph big game and other wildlife as a safari holiday. There is a certain theme or style associated with the word, which includes khaki clothing, belted bush jackets, pith helmets or slouch hats, and animal skins—like leopard's skin.

SAFARI (Système Automatisé pour les Fichiers Administratifs et le Répertoire des Individus) était un projet d'interconnexion des fichiers nominatifs de l'administration  française, notamment par le biais du numéro INSEE. La révélation de ce projet, le 21 mars 1974 par le quotidien Le Monde, dans un article intitulé "SAFARI ou la chasse aux Français", a entraîné une vive opposition populaire, ce qui a incité le gouvernement à créer la Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés. Le projet, lancé lors de la présidence de Georges Pompidou, n'a finalement jamais vu le jour.

Unter Safari [] (Safari ist ein Kisuaheli-Wort für „Reise“, das wiederum aus dem Arabischen stammt: سفر , safar „Reise“) verstand man ursprünglich eine Jagdreise in Ostafrika, bei der gewöhnlich Großwild erlegt wurde. Später wurde der Begriff dann auch auf andere Teile Afrikas und der Welt ausgedehnt, etwa wildreiche Gebiete im südlichen Afrika oder in Indien. Ursprünglich waren Safaris das Privileg der reichen, meist englischen Oberschicht in Ostafrika. Aber auch andere Landsmänner, wie die beiden britischen Könige Georg VI. und Eduard VIII., sowie bereits vor ihnen der US-amerikanische Präsident Theodore Roosevelt gingen auf Großwildjagd.
