Sabbatical year
A sabbatical year is a year of rest, usually the seventh year, like the shabbat, which is the seventh day of the week.

Sabbatical
Sabbatical or a sabbatical (from Latin sabbaticus, from Greek sabbatikos, from Hebrew shabbat, i.e., Sabbath, literally a "ceasing") is a rest from work, or a hiatus, often lasting from two months to a year. The concept of sabbatical has a source in shmita, described several places in the Bible (, for example, where there is a commandment to desist from working the fields in the seventh year). In the strict sense, therefore, sabbatical lasts a year.

Année sabbatique (repos)
Une année sabbatique est une période prolongée, généralement d'une année, dans la carrière d'un salarié, durant laquelle son contrat de travail est suspendu, ce qui lui permet de se consacrer à toute activité de son choix, écrire, voyager, ou tout simplement se reposer. Pendant cette période, il n'est en principe pas rémunéré, mais il conserve l'assurance de retrouver son emploi à son retour.

Anno sabbatico
Un anno sabbatico è un'interruzione prolungata, tipicamente un anno, e può riferirsi a:
- Anno sabbatico: nella carriera lavorativa di una persona, presa allo scopo di dedicarsi ad una particolare attività o di esaudire un desiderio, ad esempio scrivere un libro, o scalare l'Everest.
- Anno sabbatico nel calendario ebraico: ogni sette anni nel calendario ebraico cade un anno sabbatico, ovvero un anno durante il quale i campi devono essere lasciati a riposo, i crediti ed i debiti vengono saldati, gli schiavi ebrei recuperano la libertà.

Sabbatical
Een sabbatical of Sabbatical year is een jaar waarin mensen vrij nemen (of zelfs betaald vrij krijgen) van hun gewone baan om eens een poos om zich heen te kijken en iets te doen dat ze leuk vinden, bijvoorbeeld een boek schrijven of een berg beklimmen.
Een veel voorkomend doel van een sabbatical is het verruimen van de blik en het opdoen van nieuwe inspiratie.
- De gewoonte is ontstaan in de Verenigde Staten onder academici.
- In het bedrijfsleven is het gewenst om managers na een aantal werkjaren een sabbatical op te laten nemen, het voordeel hiervan zou zijn dat de verkregen nieuwe inzichten bijdragen aan een betere bedrijfsvoering. Dit is vergelijkbaar met ervaring opdoen bij een ander bedrijf, het jobhoppen.
- In Nederland is hiervoor de levensloopregeling geïntroduceerd. (2006)
