Ruthenium
Ruthenium ( ) is a chemical element with symbol Ru and atomic number 44. It is a rare transition metal belonging to the platinum group of the periodic table. Like the other metals of the platinum group, ruthenium is inert to most chemicals. The Russian scientist Karl Ernst Claus discovered the element in 1844 and named it after Ruthenia, the Latin word for Rus' (ancient Russia). Ruthenium usually occurs as a minor component of platinum ores and its annual production is only about 20 tonnes . Most ruthenium is used for wear-resistant electrical contacts and the production of thick-film resistors. A minor application of ruthenium is its use in some platinum alloys.

Ruten
Ruten (Ru, łac. ruthenium) - pierwiastek chemiczny z grupy metali przejściowych w układzie okresowym. Nazwa pochodzi od łacińskiego określenia półmitycznej, starożytnej Rusi.
Pierwiastek ten nie posiada własnych minerałów, występuje zwykle w rudzie platyny. Oficjalnie został odkryty przez profesora kazańskiego uniwersytetu, Karla Klausa w 1844 r. W zapiskach Jędrzeja Śniadeckiego z roku 1807 znajduje się informacja, że wyizolował on prawdopodobnie pierwiastek 44, który został przez niego nazwany Verticum. Sam Jędrzej Śniadecki nigdy jednak tego oficjalnie nie opublikował i zaprzeczał przyznawaniu mu prawa do tego odkrycia. Metal ten występuje głównie w stanie wolnym razem z innymi platynowcami, najczęściej w rudach siarczkowych żelaza, chromu i niklu. Zawartość w skorupie ziemskiej - 5*10-7 % wag. Tworzy głównie związki kompleksowe, ale znane są też proste związki tego pierwiastka.
