Als RUBIN wird das Projekt zur Automatisierung der U-Bahn-Linien U2 und U3 in Nürnberg bezeichnet. Der Begriff ist die Abkürzung für Realisierung einer automatisierten U-Bahn in Nürnberg und wurde von den am Projekt beteiligten Mitarbeitern entwickelt. Das Projekt wird von Siemens Mobility (ehemals Siemens Transportation Systems/Siemens TS) als ausführendes Unternehmen in Zusammenarbeit mit der Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg (VAG) betreut. Angelaufen ist die Realisierung im Jahr 2002, in Betrieb ging die U3 nach zweijähriger Verzögerung am 14. Juni 2008. Die Umstellung der U2 auf den automatischen fahrerlosen Betrieb erfolgte, nach dem vorgesehenen einjährigen Mischbetrieb, am 2. Januar 2010.

Als Rubin bezeichnet man die rote Varietät des Minerals Korund. Die rote Verfärbung ist auf geringe Beimengungen von Chrom zurückzuführen. Nur die roten Korunde heißen Rubine, wobei der Rotton zwischen Blassrot und Dunkelrot variieren kann. Rosafarbene werden allerdings ebenso wie blaue und alle anderen Farbvarietäten unter der Bezeichnung Saphir zusammengefasst.

Rubin är en värdefull ädelsten, en röd variant av mineralet korund (aluminiumoxid). Den röda färgen orsakas av mycket små mängder krom, men den kan ha en brunaktig ton. Namnet härleds från det latinska ordet för röd, ruber eller rubrum. Äkta rubiner är mycket exklusiva, men syntetiska stenar kan skapas till ett mycket lågt pris.
