It was originally designed for particle physics data analysis and contains several features specific to this field, but it is also commonly used in other applications such as astronomy and data mining.

In vascular plants, the root is the organ of a plant body that typically lies below the surface of the soil (compare with stem). However, this is not always the case, since a root can also be aerial (that is, growing above the ground) or aerating (that is, growing up above the ground or especially above water). On the other hand, a stem normally occurring below ground is not exceptional either (see rhizome). So, it is better to define root as a part of a plant body that bears no leaves, and therefore also lacks nodes. There are also important internal structural differences between stems and roots. The two major functions of roots are 1.) absorption of water and inorganic nutrients and 2.) anchoring the plant body to the ground. Roots also function in cytokinin synthesis, which supplies some of shoot needs. They often function in storage of food. The roots of most vascular plant species enter into symbiosis with certain fungi to form mycorrhizas, and a large range of other organisms including bacteria also closely associate with roots.

ROOT! is an Australian rock group from Melbourne formed in 2007. Their music combines alt-country, blues and indie rock with elements of spoken word, satire, social commentary and post-modernism. ROOT! appear onstage in cowboy hats and affect a stereotypical country image, but their music frequently takes excursions into other genres, including the use of samples and hip-hop beats. Their singer, DC Root, favours lengthy, largely spoken lyrics with a darkly satirical humour. While humour is central to the appreciation of the group’s philosophy, their music is played with authenticity and serious intent. They are not a “spoof” country act.

En botanique, la racine est l'organe souterrain d'une plante servant à la fixer au sol et à y puiser l'eau et les éléments nutritifs nécessaires à son développement. Prolongement de la tige vers le bas, elle en diffère par plusieurs caractères : sa structure interne, son géotropisme positif, la présence d'une coiffe terminale et de poils absorbants, l'absence de feuilles et de bourgeons. Der Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS) ist eine von der Filesystem Hierarchy Standard Group veröffentlichte Richtlinie, die Regeln über die Verzeichnisstruktur unter UNIX-ähnlichen Betriebssystemen festlegt. Durch den Standard, der momentan in der Version 2.3 vorliegt, können sowohl Anwendungsprogramme als auch Benutzer leichter vorhandene Dateien und Verzeichnisse lokalisieren. Dies wird erreicht, indem das Dateisystem in verschiedene Verzeichnis-Bereiche aufgeteilt wird, denen jeweils eigene Anwendungs- oder Aufgabengebiete zugeordnet werden. Die Richtlinie richtet sich hauptsächlich an Softwareentwickler, Betriebssystemhersteller und interessierte Benutzer, die dadurch angeregt werden sollen, FHS-kompatible Pakete zu veröffentlichen.

Die Wurzel (von althochdeutsch wurzala „das Gewundene“, lat. radix) ist neben Sprossachse und Blatt eines der drei Grundorgane der Kormophyten, zu denen die Samenpflanzen und Farne zählen. root (z ang., dosłownie korzeń) to tradycyjna nazwa uniksowego konta, które ma pełną kontrolę nad systemem. Z założenia konto root nie powinno być używane do pracy, do której wystarczyłoby zwykłe konto z ograniczonymi uprawnieniami. Istotną sprawą jest zabezpieczenie tego konta silnym hasłem i zabezpieczenie przed nieautoryzowanym dostępem. Dobrze jest ograniczyć możliwość logowania na konto root i używać poleceń su albo sudo.logowanie przez ssh blokujemy w Linuksie zmieniając w zbiorze /etc/ssh/sshd_config parametr PermitRootLogin z "yes" na "no". Konto root uprawnia do wykonywania takich operacji jak zmiana właściciela pliku czy otwarcie portu TCP/UDP z numerem poniżej 1024. W innych systemach operacyjnych używa się też nazw takich jak toor, superuser, supervisor, Administrator, czy operator. Nazwa root funkcjonuje, jako określenie administratora systemu, zarówno w systemach UNIX, jak i pokrewnych (FreeBSD, GNU/Linux, Mac OS X).
