The Lepcha script (also known as Róng or Róng-Ríng) is used by the Lepcha people to write the Lepcha language. It is a syllabic script which uses diacritical marks to represent vowels and requires ligatures. Its genealogy is unclear. Early Lepcha manuscripts were written vertically, a sign of Chinese influence. The Lepcha script is said to be invented by the Lepcha scholar Thikúng Men Salóng in the 17th century, but other theories say that it might have developed from the Brahmic scripts about one century later.
