Un jeu de rôle, souvent abrégé en JdR, parfois appelé jeu de rôle sur table pour le différencier des jeux de rôle psychologiques, est un jeu de société dans lequel plusieurs participants créent ou vivent ensemble une histoire par le biais de dialogues, chacun incarnant un personnage. Le support de l'imaginaire est très important et des dés, du papier et des crayons constituent l'essentiel des accessoires nécessaires pour jouer. Les rôlistes (néologisme créé dans les années 1980) font une interprétation du rôle de leur personnage.

Verwendet wird die eigene Fantasie und ein Regelwerk, das das Spiel strukturiert und eingrenzt. Bei den spontanen Rollenspielen (wie Räuber und Gendarm) sind die Regeln meistens implizit (z. B. das „Abschlagen“ des Gegners), während sie bei den reglementierten in Form eines oder mehrerer Handbücher vorliegen. Oft gibt es einen  Spielleiter.

Gra fabularna (inaczej RPG, z ang. role-playing game, często zwana grą wyobraźni, potocznie erpegiem lub rolplejem) - gra, w której gracze (od jednego do kilku) wcielają się w role fikcyjnych postaci. Cała rozgrywka toczy się w fikcyjnym świecie, istniejącym tylko w wyobraźni grających. Jej celem na ogół jest rozegranie gry według zaplanowanego scenariusza i osiągnięcie umownie określonych, lub indywidualnych celów, przy zachowaniu wybranego zestawu reguł, zwanego mechaniką gry.

In un gioco di ruolo, abbreviato spesso in GdR, GDR o RPG (dall'inglese role-playing game), un giocatore, chiamato generalmente "Master", "Custode", "Narratore" ecc. racconta una storia, mentre gli altri assumono il ruolo di personaggi della storia. A volte i personaggi sono ideati da loro, altre volte dal Master, e si muovono in un mondo immaginario o simulato, con precise e a volte complesse regole interne. Ogni personaggio è caratterizzato da svariate caratteristiche a seconda del tipo di gioco di ruolo (ad esempio forza, destrezza, intelligenza, carisma e così via), generalmente definite tramite punteggi, che descrivono le capacità del personaggio della storia. Il ruolo dei giocatori, che muovono i personaggi nella storia, e di interpretare le azioni dei personaggi e le loro reazioni al contesto immaginario che il Master crea intorno a loro.
