Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll or rock 'n' roll) is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s, primarily from a combination of African American blues, country, jazz, and gospel music. Though elements of rock and roll can be heard in country records of the 1930s, and in blues records from the 1920s, rock and roll did not acquire its name until the 1950s.

Rock ’n’ Roll (kurz für Rock and Roll) ist ein nicht klar umrissener Begriff für eine US-amerikanische  Musikrichtung der 1950er- und frühen 1960er-Jahre und das damit verbundene Lebensgefühl einer Jugend-Protestkultur. Die bis auf wenige Ausnahmen im 4/4-Takt gespielte Musik enthält einen deutlichen Backbeat/Offbeat (starker Akzent auf den geraden Zählzeiten zwei und vier).

Le rock 'n' roll (pour rock and roll), souvent raccourci en rock, est un genre musical apparu au début des années 1950 qui, de façon synthétique, mêle le blues, le rhythm and blues, le swing jazz et le gospel. Il est caractérisé par une mélodie vocale dominante, souvent accompagnée par une (ou plusieurs) guitare électrique, une guitare basse et une batterie, mais peut également être accompagné de cuivres ou autres instruments. Le rock devient par la suite une véritable "philosophie" avec sa dominance culturelle, du cinéma aux bandes dessinées en passant par la mode vestimentaire.

Bill Haley skapade Rock'n'rollen med sin låt "Rock around the clock" som var 50-talets hit. Rock'n'roll, även rock and roll, rock & roll eller rock 'n' roll, som betyder "gunga och rulla", är den ursprungliga ungdomsorienterade musikgenren till den övriga rockmusiken som utvecklades från populärmusiken  i USA under 1950-talet och strax spreds till Storbritannien och övriga Europa. Själva ordet "rock'n'roll" hämtades 1953 av den amerikanske radiomannen Alan Freed, från ett erotiskt slanguttryck inom rhythm and blues, till sitt radioprogram Moondog's Rock'n'Roll Party. Enligt en annan teori lär jukeboxtillverkaren Rock-Ola genom sitt firmanamn ha inspirerad tillkomsten av begreppet Rock & roll.

Rock and roll lub rock'n'roll (ang. kołysać i kręcić się) jest podstawową formą leżącą u fundamentów wszystkich stylów rockowych. Oryginalnie wywodzi się z uproszczonego i zredukowanego, do trzech lub czterech akordów, schematu bluesowego granego w szybkim tempie. Dodatkowo obejmuje wpływy rhythm and bluesa, country i tradycyjnego jazzu. Cechami charakterystycznymi rock-and-rolla są:

• prostota harmoniczna i rytmiczna
• najczęściej łagodne brzmienie
• tradycyjny skład - śpiew (często wielogłosowy), gitara prowadząca, gitara rytmiczna, gitara basowa, pianino lub organy i perkusja
• proste teksty dotyczące miłości i spraw młodzieży.
