The Italian Renaissance began the opening phase of the Renaissance, a period of great cultural change and achievement in Europe that spanned the period from the end of the 14th century to about 1600, marking the transition between Medieval and Early Modern Europe. The term renaissance is in essence a modern one that came into currency in the nineteenth century, in the work of historians such as Jacob Burckhardt. Although the origins of a movement that was confined largely to the literate culture of intellectual endeavor and patronage can be traced to the earlier part of the 14th century, many aspects of Italian culture and society remained largely Medieval; the Renaissance did not come into full swing until the end of the century. The word renaissance (Rinascimento in Italian) means “rebirth”, and the era is best known for the renewed interest in the culture of classical antiquity after the period that Renaissance humanists labelled the Dark Ages. These changes, while significant, were concentrated in the elite, and for the vast majority of the population life was little changed from the Middle Ages.

Das französische Wort Renaissance [] bedeutet Wiedergeburt. Bezogen auf seinen Ursprung bedeutet der Begriff die „kulturelle Wiedergeburt der Antike“. Im weiteren Sinne meint Renaissance daher die Wiedergeburt des klassischen Altertums in seinem Einfluss auf die Wissenschaft, die Literatur, die Gesellschaft, das Leben der vornehmen Kreise und die Entwicklung der Menschen zu individueller Freiheit im Gegensatz zum Ständewesen des Mittelalters. Im engeren Sinne versteht man unter der Renaissance eine kunstgeschichtliche Epoche.

Il Rinascimento è un periodo artistico e culturale della storia d'Europa, che si trova tra la fine del medioevo e l'inizio dell'età moderna. In quel periodo si instaurò un nuovo ideale di vita e il rifiorire degli studi umanistici e delle arti belle. Il rinnovamento culturale e scientifico iniziò nel XV secolo in Italia, dove uno dei centri principali fu Firenze, per poi diffondersi in tutta Europa. Nella scienza, teologia, letteratura  nell'arte, il Rinascimento iniziò con la riscoperta di testi greci e latini conservati nell'Impero Bizantino e nei principali monasteri europei, che incoraggiò tutta una serie di nuovi studi ed invenzioni nel secolo successivo. Altro centro principale di questa corrente è Napoli: grazie ai legami culturali ed artistici con Firenze ed ai rinnovamenti di Alfonso d'Aragona, nacque il Rinascimento napoletano.

De Italiaanse Renaissance heeft vele indrukwekkende schilders voortgebracht, die stuk voor stuk meesterwerken vervaardigden die nu nog tot de verbeelding spreken. De religieuze onderwerpen en de verfijnde techniek van kunstenaars zoals Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo en Rafaël zorgden hiervoor. De Renaissance of herontdekking van de Oudheid inspireerde tot verschillende stijlen. De Florentijnse was koel en transparant, de Venetiaanse daarentegen stond bekend om zijn warme licht en levendige kleuren.
