Rigiditeit is in de
geneeskunde (en andere vakgebieden) een woord dat stijfheid of starheid betekent. Zowel in mechanische als in psychische zin. In de
reumatologie kan het stijfheid van een gewricht betekenen; in de
neurologie meer stijfheid door verhoogde spierspanning.Neurologisch wordt rigiditeit vooral bij de
ziekte van Parkinson of bij
parkinsonisme gezien. Omdat bij deze ziekte
agonistische en antagonistische spieren (bijvoorbeeld buigers en strekkers) voortdurend beide aangespannen worden, verloopt het hele traject van de beweging stroef en soms schokkerig ("tandradfenomeen"). Rigidteit voelt daarom bij het lichamelijk onderzoek anders aan dan
spasticiteit waarbij alleen aan het begin van de beweging weerstand gevoeld wordt ("knipmesfenomeen").
