In geology, a rift is a place where the Earth's crust and lithosphere are being pulled apart. Typical features are a central linear downdropped fault segment, called a graben, with parallel normal faulting and rift-flank uplifts on either side forming a rift valley. The axis of the rift area commonly contains volcanic rocks and active volcanism is a part of many but not all active rift systems. Rifts are distinct from Mid-ocean ridges, where new oceanic crust and lithosphere is created by seafloor spreading. In rifts, no crust or lithosphere is produced. If rifting continues, eventually a mid-ocean ridge may form, marking a divergent boundary between two tectonic plates. Failed rifts are ancient to modern features where continental rifting began, but then failed to continue. Typically the transition from rifting to spreading develops as three converging rifts over a hotspot. Two of these evolve to the point of seafloor spreading, while the third ultimately fails, becoming an aulacogen.

Un rift est une région où la lithosphère continentale s’amincit. Morphologiquement, un rift est un fossé d'effondrement linéaire, dont les dimensions peuvent atteindre quelques dizaines de kilomètres de large pour plusieurs centaines de kilomètres de long. Cette dépression allongée, limitée par deux failles normales dites failles bordières, est le lieu d'une sédimentation le plus souvent lacustre et d'un volcanisme soutenu.

Unter Riftzone (auch Grabenbruch, Rift Valley von engl. Rift: Riss, Spalte) versteht man in der Geologie eine tektonische Dehnungszone, an der sich Risse in der Erdoberfläche bilden. Der Begriff leitet sich von der Bezeichnung Rift ab, die in der Geologie für schmale Spalten oder Brüche der Erdkruste verwendet wird. Sinkt ein Teil der Erdkruste entlang der Brüche ab, bildet sich ein Graben oder ein Becken.

Ryft - typ rowu tektonicznego o rozciągłości setek lub nawet tysięcy kilometrów, ograniczony równoległymi do siebie uskokami. Powstaje na skutek rozciągnięcia się skorupy ziemskiej nad wznoszącą się rozgrzaną materią płaszcza ziemskiego. Ryfty występują w obrębie kontynentów (ryfty śródkontynentalne), gdzie mogą wskazywać miejsce ich przyszłego rozpadu i wzdłuż grzbietów śródoceanicznych, gdzie są strefą wydobywania się magmy na powierzchnię i rozszerzania dna oceanicznego. Towarzyszą im wyraźne obniżenia terenu, doliny ryftowe.

In geologia, per rift (dall'inglese: «frattura, spaccatura») si intende un luogo in cui la crosta terrestre e la litosfera vengono separate sotto l'azione di forze di trazione. Caratteristiche tipiche sono un segmento di faglia centrale, lineare e piegato verso il basso, chiamato graben (in tedesco, letteralmente: «fossa»), il quale presenta fagliamento normale parallelo e sollevamenti dei fianchi del rift su ciascun lato, formando una fossa tettonica o rift valley. Il medesimo processo porta inoltre alla formazione, accanto al graben, anche di un horst (in tedesco: «pilastro»), ossia di una porzione di crosta terrestre relativamente rialzata.
