The ribosome is a large complex molecule which is responsible for catalyzing the formation of proteins from individual amino acids using messenger RNA as a template. This process is known as translation. Ribosomes are found in all living cells.

Ribosomen (von griech. Αραβινός, arabinos, „Traube“ und σωμα, soma, „Körper“) sind Komplexe aus Proteinen und Ribonukleinsäuren (RNA), die im Cytoplasma der Zellen von Lebewesen vorkommen. An ihnen werden Proteine hergestellt, und zwar entsprechend der Basensequenz der DNA, die die Information zur Aminosäuresequenz der Proteine enthält. Die Information zur Aminosäuresequenz in der DNA wird durch Messenger-Ribonukleinsäuren (mRNA) vermittelt. Die Umwandlung der in der mRNA gespeicherten Information in eine Abfolge von verknüpften Aminosäuren (Proteinen) wird als Translation (lat. für Übersetzung) bezeichnet. Die Translation der mRNA am Ribosom ist ein zentraler Bestandteil der Proteinbiosynthese.

Les ribosomes, molécules ribonucléoprotéiques, sont présents dans les cellules eucaryotes et procaryotes. Leur fonction est de synthétiser les protéines en décodant l'information contenue dans l'ARN messager. Les ribosomes sont constitués d'ARN ribosomiques, qui portent l'activité catalytique, et de protéines ribosomiques. Les ribosomes sont constitués de deux sous-unités, une plus petite qui « lit » l'ARN messager et une plus grosse qui se charge de la synthèse de la protéine correspondante.

Ribosomer är de enzymer i cellerna där peptider, långa kedjor av aminosyror, bildas. Denna process kallas också translation och utgör det centrala steget i proteinsyntesen. Aminosyrornas ordningsföljd i peptiden bestäms av den genetiska informationen i form av budbärar-RNA (mRNA). Ribosomerna förekommer dels fritt i cellens cytoplasma dels bundna till cellens endoplasmatiska nätverk.

Rybosomy - organelle służące do produkcji białek w ramach translacji. Są zbudowane z rRNA i białek. Katalityczna aktywność rybosomu związana jest właśnie z zawartym w nim rRNA, natomiast białka budują strukturę rybosomu i działają jako kofaktory zwiększające wydajność translacji.
