Rhinitis is the medical term describing irritation and inflammation of some internal areas of the nose. The primary symptom of rhinitis is a runny nose. It is caused by chronic or acute inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose due to viruses, bacteria or irritants. The inflammation results in the generating of excessive amounts of mucus producing a runny nose, nasal congestion and post-nasal drip. According to recent studies completed in the United States, more than fifty millon Americans are current sufferers. Rhinitis has also been found to adversely affect more than just the nose, throat, and eyes. It has been associated with sleeping problems, problems with the ears, and even been linked to learning problems.

Als Rhinitis, Nasenkatarrh, Schnupfen oder Koryza (griech. für „Erkältung“) wird eine akute oder chronische Entzündung der Nasenschleimhaut durch infektiöse, allergische und pseudoallergische Mechanismen bezeichnet. Am häufigsten tritt sie im Rahmen einer banalen Erkältung auf.

Nieżyt nosa (łac. rhinitis, corryza, potoczna nazwa katar) - pojęcie dotyczące objawów zapalenia błony śluzowej nosa (niekiedy także zatok przynosowych).Do objawów należą: kichanie, "drapanie" w nosie i gardle, kaszel, pieczenie spojówek, wyciek płynnej wydzieliny z nosa, zatkany nos, ogólne osłabienie, ból głowy, stan podgorączkowy.Najczęstszą przyczyną wystąpienia kataru są zakażenia wirusowe, szerzące się drogą kropelkową. Z tego względu należy unikać kontaktów z chorymi, ograniczyć przebywanie w większych skupiskach ludzi w okresach nasilania zachorowań (wiosna, jesień).

Rinitis is de aanduiding voor aandoeningen van de neus, zoals een geïrriteerde of ontstoken neus. De symptomen zijn een loopneus, niezen, een verstopte neus en verder geïrriteerde oren, ogen en keel.Allergische rinitis is verwant aan astma en komt vaak samen met astma voor. Het is een chronische of acute ontsteking van het neusslijmvlies, die veroorzaakt wordt door een virus, bacterie, door een parasiet of door een oorzaak van buiten af. Deze ontsteking zorgt voor de genoemde symptomen.
