A restaurant ( or ; ) is an establishment which prepares and serves food and drink to customers in return for money, either paid before the meal, after the meal, or with a running tab. Meals are generally served and eaten on premises, but many restaurants also offer take-out and food delivery services. Restaurants vary greatly in appearance and offerings, including a wide variety of the main chef's cuisines and service models.

Restaurants (französische Substantivierung aus restaurer, ‚wiederherstellen‘, ‚stärken‘) sind heute gehobene Gaststätten, in denen Speisen und Getränke angeboten und verzehrt werden. Sie bieten eine Auswahl an Gerichten an und haben separate Tische oder Räume für ihre Gäste. Die Bezeichnung „Restaurant“ entstand im 18. Jahrhundert in Frankreich.

Un restaurant est un établissement où l'on sert des plats préparés et des boissons à consommer sur place, en échange d'un paiement. Généralement, la nourriture y est préparée par un chef cuisinier. Le terme couvre une multiplicité de lieux et une grande diversité des types de cuisines, tant locales qu'étrangères. Les restaurants sont parfois le dispositif réservé au service des repas au sein d'une plus grande entité (hôtel, université, aéroport,...) .

Dania przygotowywane są na indywidualne zamówienie, produkowane głównie z surowców (rzadziej z półproduktów i gotowych potraw). Asortyment uzupełniają napoje zimne i gorące, alkohole, wyroby cukiernicze i towary handlowe (papierosy, słodycze itp.). Często posiadają odpowiedni do charakteru obiektu wystrój wnętrz i specjalizację w rodzaju kuchni (regionalna, narodowa). Ponadto restauracje świadczą usługi rozrywkowe (np. dancingi), dodatkowe (np. catering), przygotowane są do organizowania przyjęć okolicznościowych i obsługi grup.
