Most religions have religious texts they view as rules to live a proper way of life, or laws given to humans by a god. Some may also include the history of the religion in question. Many religions and spiritual movements believe that their sacred texts are wholly divine or spiritually  inspired in origin. The names of sacred scriptures are often capitalized as a mark of respect or tradition.

Un texte sacré (on parle aussi de livre sacré) a pour but de décrire la formation de l'univers et des lois qui le régissent. Les textes sacrés varient beaucoup d'une culture à l'autre, même si certains traits leur sont communs. Par exemple, le récit du Déluge se trouve chez les Celtes, les Mésopotamiens et dans la Bible.

Die Heilige Schrift ist ein Synonym für die Bibel. Im folgenden werden normative Texte von Religionen  als heilige Schriften bezeichnet.In allen Religionen, in denen schriftliche Überlieferungen eine wichtige Rolle spielen, gibt es heilige Schriften. Diese werden als auch Kanon bezeichnet, im Christentum und Judentum der Biblische Kanon, die Bücher, die zur Bibel gehören.

Molte religioni e movimenti spirituali ritengono sacri certi testi scritti (o serie di racconti orali tradizionalmente non annotati). Ritenendo spesso che i loro testi sacri (o sacre scritture) siano interamente divini o parzialmente ispirati in origine, i fedeli usano titoli come Parola di Dio per indicare le sacre scritture. Anche i non credenti spesso scrivono in maiuscolo i nomi delle sacre scritture come segno di rispetto o per tradizione.
