It is undertaken as a form of practising, to ensure that all details of the subsequent performance are adequately prepared and coordinated. Most commonly employed in the performing arts as preparation for a public presentation, rehearsals are nevertheless used in other contexts, as well, to prepare for the performance of any anticipated activity.

Eine Generalprobe ist die letzte Probe vor der Premiere eines Theaterstücks, einer Oper, Operette oder eines Konzerts. Entsprechend wird die vorletzte oder auch die drittletzte Probe als Hauptprobe bezeichnet. Der Begriff kommt ursprünglich aus der darstellenden Kunst, der dort für die letzte Probe zur Erstaufführung eines Theaterstücks, einer Oper oder einer Operette steht. Auch Musiker bezeichnen die letzte Probe vor einem Konzert als Generalprobe. So hat sich der Begriff in der Alltagssprache als Bezeichnung für einen letzten Probelauf durchgesetzt.
