An odor or odour (commonly referred to as a smell) is caused by one or more volatilized chemical compounds, generally at a very low concentration, that humans or other animals perceive by the sense of olfaction. Odors are also commonly called scents, which can refer to both pleasant and unpleasant odors. The terms fragrance and aroma are used primarily by the food and cosmetic industry to describe a pleasant odor, and are sometimes used to refer to perfumes. In contrast, malodor, stench, reek, and stink are used specifically to describe unpleasant odors.

Der Geruch (lat. Olfactus, daher olfaktorische Wahrnehmung) ist die Interpretation der Sinnes-Erregungen, die von den Chemorezeptoren der Nase oder anderer Geruchsorgane an das Gehirn eines Lebewesens geliefert werden. In einigen Gebieten der Schweiz wird für den Geruch auch das Wort Gout verwendet, was zugleich Geschmack bedeutet und mit den Wörtern Gusto und goutieren verwandt ist.

Une odeur correspond à la perception par le sens de l'odorat d'une molécule chimique ou d'un composé volatil, souvent qualifiée de molécule odorante ou de parfum, ou de fragrance dans le cas des fleurs.
Le caractère agréable, neutre ou désagréable associé à une odeur par chaque individu est pour partie d'origine innée, et pour partie acquis, mais il dépend aussi de la concentration du produit dans l'air et du fait qu'il soit ou non associé à sa source naturelle.
