The rectum (from the Latin rectum intestinum, meaning straight intestine) is the final straight portion of the large intestine in some mammals, and the gut in others, terminating in the anus. The human rectum is about 12 cm long. Its caliber is similar to that of the sigmoid colon at its commencement, but it is dilated near its termination, forming the rectal ampulla.

Der Mastdarm, norddeutsch auch Schlackdarm, (lateinisch (Intestinum) Rectum, „der gerade Darm“, eingedeutscht Rektum, Adjektiv rektal) ist ein Teil des Enddarms und damit des Dickdarms und dient der Zwischenspeicherung des Kots, d. h. der unverdaulichen und unverträglichen Nahrungsreste. Durch den Defäkationsreflex wird er über den After (lateinisch-fachsprachlich der Anus) entleert. Der Mastdarm selbst besitzt keine Schmerzrezeptoren, wohl aber seine Schließmuskeln.

Ändtarmen eller stolgången, rectum alternativt rektum, är den sista biten av tarmkanalen. Ändtarmen mynnar till kroppens utsida via en cirka tre centimeter lång gång omgiven av slutande ringmuskler, den så kallade analkanalen. Öppningen i sig kallas anus. Avföring samlas normalt upp i ändtarmen tills dess att tömning kan ske.

Odbytnica (rectum z łac. rectum intestinum, jelito proste, prostnica, kiszka stolcowa) – końcowa część jelita grubego kręgowców; w niej gromadzi się kał przed jego wydaleniem przez odbyt. U większości kręgowców odbytnica tworzy tzw. kloakę, do której odprowadzany jest zarówno kał, jak mocz i gamety. U ssaków łożyskowych odbytnica jest oddzielona od ujścia układu moczowego i rozrodczego, w związku z czym gromadzi się w niej jedynie kał.
