A recording studio is a facility for sound recording and mixing. Ideally both the recording and monitoring spaces are specially designed by an acoustician to achieve optimum acoustic properties (acoustic isolation or diffusion or absorption of reflected sound that could otherwise interfere with the sound heard by the listener). Recording studios may be used by record musicians, voice over artists for advertisements or dialogue replacement in film, television or animation, foley, or to record their accompanying musical soundtracks. The typical recording studio consists of a room called the "studio" or "live room", where instrumentalists and vocalists perform; and the "control room", where sound engineers operate professional audio for analogue or digital recording to route and manipulate the sound. Often, there will be smaller rooms called "isolation booths" present to accommodate loud instruments such as drums or electric guitar, to keep these sounds from being audible to the microphones that are capturing the sounds from other instruments, or to provide "drier" rooms for recording vocals or quieter acoustic instruments.

Ein Tonstudio ist eine Einrichtung zur Aufnahme und Bearbeitung von Schallereignissen. Dabei kann es sich um Musik jeglicher Art handeln, ebenso um Sprache und Geräusche für Hörfunk- und Fernsehbeiträge, Kinofilmton oder um Klangkreationen für Computerspiele.

Un studio d'enregistrement est un local équipé pour réaliser des enregistrements sonores, notamment musicaux. Les studios d'enregistrement professionnels comportent au minimum deux pièces : une dans laquelle on capte le son à enregistrer (avec des micros), et une autre où l'on manipule, on enregistre et on mixe les sons. Cette dernière est notamment équipée d'un magnétophone (ou d'un système d'enregistrement numérique), d'une ou plusieurs tables de mixage, d'enceintes pour restituer les enregistrements, et de divers appareils de traitements du son, qui incluent maintenant beaucoup de matériel informatique.

In een geluidsstudio wordt geluid opgenomen en/of bewerkt. In de meeste gevallen wordt er muziek opgenomen. Men spreekt dan van een muziekstudio. Doorgaans komt iedere klankbron op een apart spoor (ruimte op het medium) terecht. Dit biedt als voordeel dat het signaal op ieder spoor apart bewerkt kan worden, terwijl alle sporen tegelijkertijd hoorbaar kunnen zijn. Er bestaan drie soorten studio's: opnamestudio's, mixstudio's en masteringstudio's. De meeste studio's combineren echter ten minste twee soorten.
