Als Realität (lat. realitas, von res „Ding“) oder Wirklichkeit wird im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch die Gesamtheit des Realen bezeichnet. Il reality show (dall'inglese, traducibile come spettacolo della realtà, spesso semplicemente abbreviato reality) è un genere di programma televisivo in cui sono trasmesse situazioni drammatiche e umoristiche non dettate da un copione ma che i protagonisti sperimentano esattamente come fosse la loro vita reale. Attorno a queste situazioni si costruisce una struttura di nomination ed eliminazioni, di commento e critica, per cui alla fine tra i protagonisti che hanno partecipato al programma viene eletto, solitamente dal pubblico televisivo, un vincitore, cui spetta un premio molto appetibile (in genere grosse somme di denaro, contratti televisivi o discografici ecc.).
