Rationalization
Rationalisation can refer to more than one thing:Rationalization in psychology is the process of constructing a logical justification for a decision that was originally arrived at through a different mental process.Rationalization in hypnosis is the rational justification for obeying a suppressed post-hypnotic command.Rationalization in economics is an attempt to change a pre-existing ad-hoc workflow into one that is based on a set of published rules.Rationalization in sociology is the means of transition from a traditional society into a rationalized one.Rationalization in politics is justification of power by means of rationality (rationality and power).Rationalisation in 'between the wars' British history was the process of destroying old factories and gradually replacing them with newer and better ones. This was initiated by Neville Chamberlain in 1931 and it eventually ended in 1938.Rationalisation in mathematics is the process of removing a square root or imaginary number from the denominator of a fraction. See conjugate (algebra) and complex conjugate.Rationalisation in Engineering (within complex impedance and admittance systems) is to multiply the numerator and denominator by the complex conjugate of the denominator to remove the imaginary numbers from the denominator while converting admittance to impedance. Rationalisation is business jargon for a reduction in numbers, especially the laying off of staff.
