Rapping is the rhythmic spoken delivery of rhymes and wordplay, one of the central elements of hip hop music and culture. Although the word rap has sometimes been claimed to be a backronym of the phrase "Rhythmic American Poetry", "Rhythm and Poetry", "Rhythmically Applied Poetry", or "Rhythmically Associated Poetry", use of the word to describe quick and slangy speech or repartee long predates the musical form.

Rap [] ist ein Sprechgesang und Teil der Kultur des Hip-Hop. „To rap“ (dt.: klopfen, pochen, meckern oder aber R.a.P. = Rhythm and Poetry zu dt.: Rhythmus und Poesie) deutet die Art der Musik und des Sprechgesangs an. Mit dem Begriff „Rap-Musik“ bezeichnet man daher auch die Hip-Hop-Musik. Heute hat sich der Rap teilweise von seinen Wurzeln gelöst und wird auch in anderen Musikstilen eingesetzt, z. B. in  Pop, Eurodance, Crossover und Nu Metal. Besonders in Bereichen unkommerzieller Rap-Musik, wie dem sogenannten Untergrund- oder Porno-Rap ist eine deutliche Abgrenzung zur ursprünglichen Hip-Hop-Musik erkennbar.

Rap to muzyczna część kultury hip-hopu, gatunek charakteryzujący się rytmiczną melorecytacją. Powstał w latach siedemdziesiątych XX wieku w Nowym Jorku w południowej części dzielnicy Bronx, zamieszkanej głównie przez Afroamerykanów. Rap wywodzi się z muzyki funk oraz jazzu, polega na melorecytacji na beatach. Są to podkłady, najczęściej złożone z sampli ze starych winylowych płyt. Jedną z najważniejszych elementów podkładu sa bębny, ponieważ MCs rapują właśnie do perkusji, która nadaje rytm. W rapie nie ma jednak zasady dotyczących podkładów, mogą składać się z samej perkusji bądź być bardzo złożone. Cechą charakterystyczną szczególnie dla starszych beatów jest loopowanie czyli zapętlanie motywu.

Il rap (letteralmente "chiacchiera" e spesso chiamato anche, ma non del tutto correttamente, hip hop) è un genere musicale sorto negli Stati Uniti a metà degli anni settanta, e diventato parte di spicco della cultura moderna. Il rap è formato da due componenti fondamentali: il rapping (MCing, freestyle) e il DJing (turntablism, beatmaking, scratching). Insieme agli stili di ballo hip hop (specie la breakdance) e al graffiti writing, rapping e DJing sono tra i quattro elementi della cultura hip hop, iniziata presso la comunità afroamericana di New York nei primi anni settanta.
