Rail transport is the transport of passengers and goods by means of wheeled vehicles specially designed to run along railways or railroads. Rail transport is part of the logistics chain, which facilitates the international trading and economic growth in most countries.A typical railway/railroad track consists of two parallel rails, normally made of steel, secured to cross-beams, termed sleepers (U.K.) or 'ties' (U.S.). The sleepers maintain a constant distance between the two rails; a measurement known as the 'gauge' of the track. To maintain the alignment of the track it is either laid on a bed of ballast or else secured to a solid concrete foundation. The whole is referred to as permanent way (UK usage) or right-of-way (North American usage).

Le chemin de fer est un système de transport guidé servant au transport de personnes et de marchandises. Il se compose d'une infrastructure spécialisée, de  matériel roulant et de procédures d'exploitation faisant le plus souvent intervenir l'humain, même si dans le cas des métros automatiques cette intervention se limite en temps normal à de la surveillance.

Die Eisenbahn ist ein schienengebundenes Verkehrsmittel zur Beförderung von Personen und zum Transport von Gütern.Die Fahrzeuge der Eisenbahnen fahren mit zumeist stählernen Rädern auf stählernen Schienen und werden dabei durch Spurkränze in der Spur gehalten. Die Fortbewegung erfolgt heutzutage durch verschiedenartige maschinelle Antriebe in den Fahrzeugen selbst (Triebwagen) oder durch spezielle Zugfahrzeuge (Lokomotiven). (Ausnahme ist die Standseilbahn, bei der die Fahrzeuge durch Seilwinden bewegt werden). Als Weiterentwicklung der Eisenbahn kann die spurgeführte Magnetschwebebahn betrachtet werden.

Kolej – środek  transportu lądowego o trasie wytyczonej torem kolejowym albo liną, którą poruszają się pociągi lub pojedyncze wagony, czy kabiny. Kolej jest formą transportu sztywnotorowego, tzn. jej pojazdy mogą poruszać się tylko charakterystycznym dla danej technologii torem. Do autobusu torowego zatem termin "kolej" się nie odnosi.

Con il termine ferrovia si intende generalmente l'infrastruttura di trasporto terrestre, idonea alla circolazione di treni. Per estensione, la medesima parola assume anche il significato di linea ferroviaria o di sistema ferroviario, indicando in quest'ultimo caso tutte le infrastrutture, la tecnologia ed il personale necessari a garantire la circolazione dei treni sulle linee ferroviarie.
