Se entiende por ferrocarril, en el sentido amplio del término, el sistema de transporte terrestre guiado sobre carriles o rieles de cualquier tipo, aunque normalmente se entiende que los rieles son de acero o hierro (del latín ferrum), que hacen el camino o vía férrea sobre la cual circulan los trenes. Dentro de esta clasificación se incluyen medios de transporte que emplean otros tipos de guiado, tales como los trenes de levitación magnética.
