A Chinese radical (from the Latin radix, meaning "root") is a component of a Chinese character. The term may variously refer to the original semantic (meaning-bearing) element of a character, or to any semantic element, or, loosely, to any element whatever its origin or purpose. The term is commonly used to describe the element under which a character is traditionally listed in a Chinese dictionary, which is often semantic but may sometimes be a phonetic or merely artificially extracted portion of the character. When used in this way as  dictionary section headers , radicals form the basis of an indexing system that has classified Chinese characters throughout the ages, from ancient Shuowén Jiézì characters to their modern successors.

Ein Radikal (von latein radix, Wurzel) bzw. Klassenhaupt oder Wurzelzeichen (; jap. bushu; koreanisch: 부수, busu), ist eine grafische Grundkomponente eines chinesischen Schriftzeichens (auch von Kanji und Hanja). Diese Zuordnung ist oft offensichtlich, manchmal rein traditionell und nur aus der historischen Entwicklung des Zeichens nachvollziehbar, manchmal auch ziemlich willkürlich. In Nachschlagewerken werden die Schriftzeichen nach Radikalen indiziert und können so gefunden werden.

La plupart des sinogrammes sont composés de plusieurs éléments graphiques juxtaposés (voir Composition d'un sinogramme). Les clés ou radicaux des sinogrammes sont des éléments graphiques qui entrent dans la composition des sinogrammes et qui sont utilisés pour les classer. Ce classement peut parfois avoir une certaine cohérence avec le sens des sinogrammes en question, c'est-à-dire que des sinogrammes partageant la même clé appartiendront à un même champ lexical.

Een radicaal (van het Latijnse radix ofwel 'wortel') is een duidelijk identificeerbare basiscomponent van ieder Chinees karakter. Dit geldt niet alleen voor het Chinese schrift (hanzi) maar ook voor de van het Chinees afgeleide schriften zoals het Japanse kanji, het Koreaanse hanja en het Vietnamese Chữ nôm en Chữ nho.
