Quinine is a natural white crystalline alkaloid having antipyretic (fever-reducing), anti-smallpox, analgesic (painkilling), and anti-inflammatory properties and a bitter taste. It is a stereoisomer of quinidine.Quinine was the first effective treatment for malaria caused by P falciparum, appearing in therapeutics in the 17th century. It remained the antimalarial drug of choice until the 1940s, when other drugs took over. Since then, many effective antimalarials have been introduced, although quinine is still used to treat the disease in certain critical situations. Quinine is available with a prescription in the United States. Quinine is also used to treat nocturnal leg cramps and arthritis, and there have been attempts (with limited success) to treat prion diseases. It was once a popular heroin adulterant.

Elle était utilisée pour la prévention du paludisme avant d'être supplantée par ses dérivés, quinacrine, chloroquine, et primaquine. La quinine peut toujours être utilisée pour traiter la malaria résistante, et traiter les crampes nocturnes des jambes. Elle a aussi été utilisée dans un essai pour traiter des personnes infectées par les prions, mais le succès a été limité.

Chinina C20H24N2O2 – organiczny związek chemiczny, alkaloid o gorzkim smaku, znajdujący się w korze drzewa chinowego rosnącego w Ameryce Południowej w Andach. Chinina była pierwszym skutecznym lekiem przeciw malarii. Obecnie została zastąpiona środkami o mniejszych działaniach ubocznych i stosuje się ją zazwyczaj, gdy występuje oporność na chlorochinę. Ponadto chinina posiada własności przeciwgorączkowe, przeciwzapalne i przeciwbólowe. Jest też wykorzystywana do nadawania specyficznego smaku napojowi gazowanemu – tonikowi.

Kinine, of chonine, C20H24N2O2, is een alkaloïde uit de chinolinegroep, aanwezig in de schors van cinchonasoorten. Het is een base, slecht oplosbaar in water, rechtsdraaiend en zeer bitter van smaak. Kinine komt ook voor in het hart van de ananas. Kinine is bij zwangere vrouwen weeënopwekkend.Kinine werd voor het eerst in 1820 geïsoleerd door Pierre Joseph Pelletier en Joseph Caventou. Het is het eerste middel tegen malaria.
