Quadrupel is the brand name of a strong seasonal
beer La Trappe Quadrupel brewed by
De Koningshoeven Brewery in the
Netherlands, the only
Trappist brewing
abbey not in
Belgium. Some brewers and beer writers within the
United States use 'Quadrupel' or 'Quad' to refer to high-
alcohol beers with the spicy, ripe fruit flavor profile found in some
Trappist, abbey, or Belgian-style beers. Although some Trappist and Abbey breweries produce beers stronger than their Tripels (
Chimay Bleu, St Bernardus Abt), Belgians tend not to use the term, preferring to use the naming conventions single or
enkel,
dubbel, and
tripel. Some beer writers use the term
barleywine to describe beers over 10 percent alcohol. The Dutch equivalent (gerstewijn) is sometimes also used in Belgium in the same context, but its use remains fairly rare.
