Purchasing power is the number of goods/services that can be purchased with a unit of currency. For example, if you had taken one dollar to a store in the 1950s, you would have been able to buy a greater number of items than you would today, indicating that you would have had a greater purchasing power in the 1950s.  Currency can be either a commodity money, like gold or silver, or fiat currency, or free-floating market-valued currency like US dollars. As Adam Smith noted, having money gives one the ability to "command" others' labor, so purchasing power to some extent is power over other people, to the extent that they are willing to trade their labor or goods for money or currency.

Als Kaufkraft der Verbraucherhaushalte wird das in privaten Haushalten für Konsumzwecke verfügbare Einkommen bezeichnet, also derjenige Betrag, der pro Haushalt vom Einkommen verbleibt, nachdem alle regelmäßig wiederkehrenden Zahlungsverpflichtungen (zum Beispiel Wohnungsmieten, Kreditraten, Versicherungsprämien) bedient wurden. Die Kaufkraft kann sich somit entweder auf das monatliche Einkommen oder auch das Jahreseinkommen einer Person oder eines Haushalts beziehen.

Le pouvoir d'achat du salaire est la quantité de biens et services que l'ont peut acheter avec une unité de salaire. Son évolution est liée à celles des prix et des salaires. Si les prix augmentent dans un environnement où les salaires sont constants, le pouvoir d'achat diminue.

Köpkraft. Ett hushålls köpkraft är dess förmåga och vilja att köpa. Den är vanligtvis beroende av inkomst, förmögenhet och priser på konsumtionsvaror. En valutas köpkraft är dess bytesvärde. Köpkraften är högre ju lägre prisnivå det är i landet.

Siła nabywcza - ilość towarów i usług jakie można zakupić za dany nominał pieniądza. Zmiany rozmiarów siły nabywczej można określić porównując ogólny poziom cen w poszczególnych okresach: wzrost ogólnego poziomu cen oznacza spadek siły nabywczej i odwrotnie.
