The pupil is a hole located in the center of the iris of the eye that allows light to enter the retina. It appears black because most of the light entering the pupil is absorbed by the tissues inside the eye. In humans the pupil is round, but other species, such as some cats, have vertical slit pupils, goats have horizontally oriented pupils, and some catfish have annular types. In optical terms, the anatomical pupil is the eye's aperture and the iris is the aperture stop. The image of the pupil as seen from outside the eye is the entrance pupil, which does not exactly correspond to the location and size of the physical pupil because it is magnified by the cornea. On the inner edge lies a prominent structure, the collarette, marking the junction of the embryonic pupillary membrane covering the embryonic pupil.

Die Pupille ist eine natürliche Öffnung in der Iris des Auges, durch die das Licht in das Innere des Auges einfallen kann. Der Begriff ist vermutlich abgeleitet von dem „Püppchen“ (lateinisch pupilla), als das man sich selbst im Auge eines Menschen spiegelt, den man direkt anschaut. Das Auge steuert durch Verkleinern (Miosis) oder Vergrößern (Mydriasis) der Pupille mit Hilfe des Musculus sphincter pupillae und des Musculus dilatator pupillae den Lichteinfall auf die Netzhaut.

Dans l'œil, la pupille est le trou situé au milieu de l'iris. Il nous apparaît noir étant donné que la majorité de la lumière entrant dedans est absorbée par les tissus de l'œil. Źrenica (łac. pupilla) - otwór w oku odpowiedzialny za ilość wpuszczanego do niej światła. Ruchy źrenicy należą do jednych z najczęściej badanych odruchów przy różnego rodzaju urazach z utratą przytomności. Jest otoczona przez tęczówkę. Gdy tęczówka się zwęża, to źrenica rozszerza się. Źrenica może zwiększyć się nawet 7 razy.
