Public health is concerned with threats to the overall health of a community based on population health analysis. Health is defined and promoted differently by many organizations. The World Health Organization, the United Nations body that sets standards and provides global surveillance of disease, defines health as: "A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Public health experts agree that nutritional, spiritual, and intellectual aspects also affect an individual's health.

Gesundheitswissenschaften (englisch: Public Health) ist seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre in Deutschland als wissenschaftliches Fach bekannt. Beide Begriffe werden synonym verwendet, wobei eine Tendenz zum Begriff Public Health auszumachen ist.Haisch, Weitkunat und Wildner (1999, S. 317) definieren Gesundheitswissenschaften als die "Wissenschaft und Praxis der Krankheitsverhütung, Lebensverlängerung und Gesundheitsförderung durch organisierte, gemeindebezogene Maßnahmen; ein interdisziplinäres Gebiet, das sich mit Gesundheit und ihren Determinanten befaßt". Schwartz (1998) spricht von der "Analyse, Bewertung und Organisation von Gesundheitsproblemen in der Bevölkerung und ihrer Verhinderung beziehungsweise Bekämpfung mit angemessenen, wirksamen und ökonomisch vertretbaren Mitteln".

Zdrowie publiczne - nauka zajmująca się zdrowiem na poziomie populacji, zapobieganiem chorobom, przedłużaniem życia, promowaniem zdrowia i aktywności fizycznej poprzez zorganizowane wysiłki na rzecz higieny środowiska, kontrolę chorób zakaźnych, oświatę dotyczącą zasad higieny osobistej, tworzenie i funkcjonowanie służb medycznych i opiekuńczych w celu wczesnego diagnozowania i zapobiegania chorobom, rozwijanie takich społecznych mechanizmów, które zapewnią każdemu standard życia umożliwiający zachowanie i umacnianie zdrowia.

公衆衛生（こうしゅうえいせい、Public Health）は、集団の健康の分析に基づく地域全体の健康への脅威を扱う。健康は多くの機関により、さまざまに定義されている。疾病の実態調査の標準を設定・提供する国際連合の機関である世界保健機関は、健康を「身体的・精神的・社会的に完全に良好な状態であり、たんに病気あるいは虚弱でないことではない」と定義している。公衆衛生は多くの分野からなる。しかし典型的な区分としては疫学、生物統計学、医療制度がある。環境・社会・行動衛生、職業衛生も、重要な分野である。世界保健機関は公衆衛生を「組織された地域社会の努力を通して、疾病を予防し、生命を延長し、身体的、精神的機能の増進をはかる科学であり技術である」と定義している。
