Protozoa (in Greek proto = first and zoa = animals) are one-celled eukaryotes (that is, unicellular microbes whose cells have membrane-bound nuclei) that commonly show characteristics usually associated with animals,  mobility and heterotrophy. Protozoans were commonly grouped in the kingdom Protista together with the plant-like algae and fungus-like water molds and slime molds. In 21st-century systematics, however, most of the algae are classified in kingdoms such as Plantae and Chromista; and in such cases the remaining life forms are occasionally classified as a kingdom Protozoa. But the name is misleading, since protozoans are neither Animalia nor Metazoa, with the possible exception of the enigmatic, moldy Myxozoa).

Protozoen (Einzahl: Protozoon, [alt]griechisch πρωτόζωο[ν], protózoo[n], „das erste Tier“, von πρώτο, próto, „das erste“ und ζώο[ν], zóo[n], „das Tier, das Lebende“) oder Urtiere ist eine veraltete Bezeichnung für aufgrund ihrer heterotrophen Lebensweise und ihrer Mobilität als tierisch angesehene Einzeller, die keine Zellwand und im Gegensatz zu Bakterien einen Zellkern besitzen. Karl Grell definiert sie als Eukaryoten (einen oder mehreren Zellkernen), welche als Einzelzellen leben oder koloniale Verbände bilden.

Protisty zwierzęce - organizmy cudzożywne należące do królestwa protistów, wg dawnej klasyfikacji były zaliczane do królestwa zwierząt, wchodząc w skład typu lub podkrólestwa pierwotniaki (Protozoa). Są to organizmy jednokomórkowe odżywiające się cudzożywnie, na drodze fagocytozy (poza apikompleksami), pasożytnicze lub drapieżne. Grupa ta nie stanowi taksonu i prawdopodobnie jest polifiletyczna.

I protozoi sono organismi unicellulari eucarioti, autotrofi o eterotrofi, a volte, come nel caso di Euglena viridis, l'individuo è eterotrofo facoltativo, se posto in ambiente non luminoso. Sono provvisti di tutti gli organuli cellulari, a volte di vacuoli pulsanti (1 o 2), e di organi fotosensibili. Si muovono tramite flagelli, ciglia o pseudopodi (amebe). Si conoscono oltre 35000 specie di protozoi.Essi mancano di attributi tipici dei (metazoi) , quali la costruzione cellulare stratificata.

Protozoa (van het Griekse: prootos=eerste, zoo-on=dier; "oerdiertjes") of protozoën zijn eencellige, eukaryotische micro-organismen. Protozoa worden in vier groepen verdeeld; volgens de manier waarop ze zich voortbewegen:Flagellata of zweepdiertjes. Deze bezitten zweepdraden waarmee ze kunnen voortbewegen en voeden.Ciliata of trilhaardiertjes. Deze hebben kleine trilhaartjes over de gehele cel.
