Protostomes (from the Greek: mouth first) are a taxon of animals. Together with the deuterostomes and a few smaller phyla, they make up the Bilateria, mostly comprising animals with bilateral symmetry and three germ layers. The major distinctions between deuterostomes and protostomes are found in embryonic development. In protostome development, the first opening in development, the blastopore, becomes the animal's mouth. In deuterostome development, the blastopore becomes the animal's anus. Protostomes have what is known as spiral cleavage which is determinate, this meaning that the fate of the cells is determined as they are formed. This is in contrast to deuterostomes which have radial cleavage that is indeterminate.

Die Urmünder (Protostomia) sind eine Stammgruppe aus der Abteilung der Gewebetiere (Eumetazoa). Zu den Urmündern gehören Tierstämme mit vollständigem Verdauungstrakt, bei denen in der Embryonalentwicklung des Darmes der Urmund zum Mund wird und der After sekundär durchbricht. Sowohl die Häutungstiere (Ecdysozoa) als auch die Lophotrochozoen (Lophotrochozoa) gehören zu den Urmündern.Die Urmünder sind, im Gegensatz zu den Neumündern, eine paraphyletische Gruppe.

Pierwouste, pragębowce (Protostomia) - grupa zwierząt dwubocznie symetrycznych, u których nie wytwarza się wtórny otwór gębowy, otwór gastruli (pragęba) staje się w rozwoju osobniczym otworem gębowym. Grupa przeciwstawiana wtóroustym. Rozwój zarodkowy: 1) U pierwoustych wrzeciono podziałowe trzeciego podziału podczas bruzdkowania ustawia się skośnie do długiej osi blastomerów, na skutek czego małe blastomery leżą na granicach dużych. 2) Pragęba przemieszcza się na płaszczyznę równikową zarodka i powstaje z niej otwór gębowy, a po przeciwnej stronie przez zagłębienie ektodermy powstaje odbyt. 3) Mezoderma tworzy się w yniku podziału komórek, które migrują i ustawaiją się między ektodermą i ednodermą.

I Protostomi costituiscono un vastissimo ed eterogeneo raggruppamento animale. Da un punto di vista sistematico sono considerati da alcuni autori un ramo e da altri un superphylum del sottoregno dei Bilateria.La caratteristica comune più rilevante di questo raggruppamento consiste nell'omologia fra il blastoporo e la regione buccale dell'embrione. Ciò significa che il blastoporo formatosi dalla gastrulazione genera nelle fasi successive dell'accrescimento direttamente la bocca o il suo territorio. La metameria, quando presente, è quasi completa e riguarda quasi tutti i sistemi organici. Il sistema nervoso è tipicamente gangliare, costituito da gangli cefalici sopraintestinali e catana nervosa gangliare sottointestinale. Per questa ragione sono detti anche gastroneurali. La circolazione del sangue avviene tipicamente in senso cefalo-caudale nei vasi ventrali e in senso caudo-cefalico nel vaso dorsale. Non esiste mai dermascheletro di origine mesodermica.
