In computing, protected mode, also called protected virtual address mode, is an operational mode of x86-compatible central processing units (CPU). It allows system software to use features such as virtual memory, paging and safe multi-tasking designed to increase an operating system's control over application software.

Der Begriff Schutzmodus, auch geschützter Modus oder englisch protected mode, bezeichnet einen speziellen Betriebsmodus der IA-32-Architektur (auch als x86-Architektur bekannt) von Intel, der seit dem 80286er Prozessor vorhanden ist. Dieser erlaubt einen Zugriff auf 16 MB Hauptspeicher (16-Bit Protected Mode). Mit dem 80386er wurde ein 32-Bit-Modus eingeführt, der den Zugriff auf bis zu 4 GB Hauptspeicher gestattet. Dieser Modus wird von allen modernen PC-Betriebssystemen (bei Microsoft seit Windows NT 3.1, bzw. für Consumer seit Windows 95, von Apple seit Umstellung auf die Intel-Plattform, also mit OSX 10.4.4) verwendet.

Le mode protégé est un mode de fonctionnement des processeurs basés sur l'architecture x86 d'Intel à partir du 80286. Il est aussi présent dans les séries x86-64 sous deux formes possibles : 32 bits et 64 bits.

Tryb chroniony (ang. protected mode) – to tryb pracy  mikroprocesorów serii x86 wprowadzony w mikroprocesorze Intel 80286. Tryb chroniony umożliwia adresowanie pamięci w większym zakresie niż 1 MiB (tryb rzeczywisty), wprowadza wiele nowych udogodnień wspierających wielozadaniowość, takich jak: sprzętowa ochrona pamięci (układ MMU), wsparcie przełączania kontekstu procesora i wiele innych.

La modalità protetta è una delle modalità in cui può funzionare una CPU Intel a partire dall'80286. Questa modalità di funzionamento fornisce direttamente dal lato hardware un supporto alla multiprogrammazione, impedendo che un programma possa accedere per errore all'area di memoria assegnata ad un altro programma. A partire dall'80386 i processori permettono di utilizzare la memoria virtuale paginata col supporto diretto dell'hardware.
