For the 2007 documentary film, see Protagonist (film) A protagonist is a term used to refer to a figure or figures in literature whose intentions are the primary focus of a story. Classically protagonists are derived from good will, however, this does not always have to be true. Protagonists cannot exist in a story without opposition from a figure or figures called antagonist(s). Classically in literature, characters with good will are usually the protagonists; however, not all characters who assist the protagonist are required to be simple protagonistic. In some nineteenth century novels, for example, Wilkie Collins' "No Name," the protagonist, Magdalen Vanstone, is introduced with an extended description, and thereafter simply expresses the qualities given in the description. Similarly, in much "formula fiction" (as critic John Cawelti calls ?-, proto- (the combinative form of protos 'first') and agōnistes ('one who contends for a prize').

Der Protagonist (griechisch πρωταγωνιστής – „Haupt-“, „Erst-Handelnder“, von πρώτος, prótos – „der erste“ und άγω, ágo – „ich handle“, „bewege“, „führe“) bezeichnet in der griechischen Tragödie den Darsteller der ersten Rolle (ggf. vor Deuteragonist und Tritagonist, d. h. zweiter und dritter  Hauptrolle).

Die Hauptrolle ist eine Figur in der Literatur oder der Darstellenden Kunst (Theater, Film, Ballett, Oper usw.), welche die Erzählung oder Choreographie maßgeblich vorantreibt. Die Hauptrolle wird mit dem Hauptdarsteller besetzt. In den meisten Fällen handelt es sich dabei um den Protagonisten, jedoch kann auch ein Antagonist die Hauptrolle innehaben. Sie zu verkörpern kann für einen Schauspieler mit höchstem Ruhm einhergehen. So ist der Oscar für die beste weibliche oder männliche Hauptrolle, einer der wichtigsten Filmpreise für einem Schauspieler.

Protagonista – termin pochodzenia greckiego. W  teatrze starożytnej Grecji był to główny aktor, który prowadził dialog z chórem i innymi aktorami występującymi w sztuce. W teatrze późniejszych epok określano tym mianem osobę, wokół której toczy się akcja, która jest jej głównym motorem, a także której przemiana jest opisywana. Protagonista w tym ujęciu nie musi być osobą graną przez jakiegokolwiek aktora w dramacie.

De protagonist is het personage waar het verhaal van een film, toneelstuk of boek om draait.Meestal leidt hij in het begin een rustig leventje tot er iets gebeurt. Dit is vaak een ontwikkeling met dramatische gevolgen. In de introductie van het personage wordt duidelijk gemaakt wie hij is, wat hij doet en wat hem beweegt. Zodra het publiek weet waarover het gaat, geeft de protagonist aan wat hij wil veranderen (plotpoint 1).
